“Government cash” Is Taxpayer’s Cash
“Government cash” is taxpayer’s cash. The government doesn’t have any money of its own. The question I ask, whenever government spends some of ‘their’ cash (your cash), is: would I have chosen to contribute to this voluntarily? It’s a serious question. While millions are having to tighten their belts and count the pennies to make ends meet, the government taxes never rest. Each time the government spends money it doesn’t need to spend really it should be taxing hard working penny pinched people less.
I don’t automatically clap my hands for joy whenever the government announces it is spending money. I ask whether government has any business spending other people’s money for them in the way they propose. Sadly the answer is often no. Some of us may be happy with the way government taxes and spends at times. Even when I agree with what the government proposes to do I still ask this question: just because I think it is a good idea, does it give me the right to assume everyone does, and that they would rather spend their earnings on this, rather than make their family finances a little easier? And the answer to that is self-evident. We shouldn’t be making it hard for people to be self-sufficient by allowing government to tax so much and decide on their behalf what the spending priorities of our neighbours should be.
